Some Holiday Spirit
Most people identify the day after Thanksgiving as Black Friday, but for me it’s the first day that 93.9 plays non-stop holiday jams until December, 25th! #WINNING! For me, post turkey-day marks the beginning of colorful Christmas lights, sky-high pine trees, decadent ginger bread houses, warm spiced wine, Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas album, ice skating on State St, and lots and lots of snow! Although I love all the Christmas glitz and glam, the holiday season is about so much more than beautiful decor, festive jingles, and wish lists. It’s a time to come together with loved ones, celebrate tradition, and do something kind for those in need.
When I turned 30, something inside me snapped. The weight of life’s obstacles had finally taken their toll, and I knew I needed to make a change. I was finally ready to dig deep, and work on the issues that brought out the sides of myself that I didn’t like. It’s never easy to face the reality of your biggest struggles. It’s never easy to accept the parts of yourself that you wish you could erase. In fact, it fu*king sucks… BUT nothing truly great in life comes easy. The truth is that everyone struggles with something. Whether it’s family drama, death, addiction, mental illness, a breakup, or something as minor as a toothache, we all have problems. The important thing is to work past those issues and not let them rule your life.
My on-going journey towards a happier, more fulfilled ME has really changed my perspective on the holidays. When I finally stopped feeling sorry for myself, I found acceptance in my shortcomings, and began to love myself for the very first time. I stopped worrying so much about pleasing others, and began building more genuine, honest relationships with my loved ones. In years past, my excitement for the holidays was centered around the party, the food, and gifts. Today, I most look forward to connecting with friends and family, making memories, and giving to those who are less fortunate.
No matter what the holidays mean to you, I hope you are surrounded by the things you love and value most. Remember that the road to true happiness begins with loving yourself. Once you have that, everything else will fall into place.
Makeup is another way I can use my talents as an artist to boost someone’s spirit during the holidays.
One of my favorite things about being a makeup artist is making people feel good. Makeup can be so much more than vanity. It can be an experience that makes a woman or man feel confident and beautiful. A makeup application by a professional can be a form a self-care, where you are doing something for you, because you deserve it. When I get a bride ready for one of the most important days in her life, it’s so rewarding to watch her see herself for the first time, and know that she has never felt so beautiful. To me, my job is not simply making people look good, it’s about helping each and every client feel like the most beautiful versions of themselves.
Recently, I asked my life-long, best friend of 29 years to model for my blog. Nina, or Bean as I like to call her, is currently in Nursing school while raising her precious one-year old son, Cash. She is an exceptional mother, and one of the most hard-working women I know. Like many busy, on-the-go, super-moms, she barely has a second to spare for herself. I was so excited when she agreed to let me do her hair and makeup for this post because one, she is DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, and two, she deserves some ME time!
About an hour after Nina left my house she sent me a text to express her gratitude. She stated that she really NEEDED our glam session more than either of us realized. She said the experience really lifted her spirits, and she couldn’t remember the last time she felt that good about herself. It’s moments like that, that make me so appreciative for my job. Although Nina could put a garbage bag over her head, and still look like a super-model, there is no greater feeling than knowing I helped someone feel better about themselves from the inside out.
